Background: In my role as a Product Design Manager at ATG, I have been deeply immersed in the dynamic world of design and its application within the organization. ATG's environment presented a unique blend of opportunities and challenges that demanded a holistic approach to transformation. The organization's structure was characterized by complexity, with multiple layers of leadership and a diverse range of stakeholders. The design maturity within the organization was relatively low, and there was a lack of clear objectives and streamlined processes. Additionally, issues like budget constraints, leadership ambiguity, and low team morale were prevalent, creating an environment ripe for transformation.
Challenge: Undoubtedly, one of the most significant challenges I encountered was steering a design team through a period of turbulence and uncertainty. The sluggish decision-making process, organizational restructuring, and absence of cohesive leadership had led to a sense of disarray. The team's motivation was affected, leading to low morale and a decline in productivity. Furthermore, the lack of synchronization across various channels and teams, along with an absence of clear priorities and deadlines, compounded the challenges. It was evident that a strategic and comprehensive approach was needed to address these multifaceted issues and lead the team towards a more cohesive and impactful future.
Solution: In the face of these challenges, I undertook a multifaceted approach that revolved around Change Leadership through Design. I recognized the need to instill clarity, structure, and a sense of purpose within the team. To achieve this, I began by creating a strong design culture that emphasized collaboration, innovation, and a shared sense of purpose. Clear communication channels were established to bridge gaps and ensure that everyone was aligned and well-informed.
One of the key solutions was to develop a comprehensive strategy that encompassed short-term improvements and long-term transformation. I encouraged the team to embrace a design-driven mindset and provided them with the tools and methodologies to do so. By focusing on team building, skill development, and creating platforms for open dialogue, I nurtured an environment of growth and empowerment.
To address the challenges related to leadership ambiguity and synchronization, I facilitated workshops and training sessions that equipped the team with a common language and understanding. This played a crucial role in creating a cohesive and unified team that could work towards common goals. Additionally, I introduced clear priorities, set deadlines, and established an atmosphere of accountability to drive performance and motivation.
In summary, my approach involved a blend of strategic planning, open communication, skill development, and a strong emphasis on design-driven methodologies. By actively addressing each challenge head-on, I successfully transformed a once-fragmented team into a cohesive and motivated unit that embraced change and delivered impactful results. The journey, while challenging, has been marked by measurable progress, increased collaboration, and a stronger sense of purpose within the organization.

In the role of Product Design Manager, you have the ultimate ownership of product design and lead the work within the team. You work primarily strategically to improve how ATG works with product design and insight-driven product development. You are a strong ambassador for a customer and insight-centered approach and focus on promoting collaboration between different parts of the organization. You will be a key player in defining the company's future products.
You have budget and personnel responsibilities and will set up strategies and goals for the team, coach employees and collaborate with other parts of the company. You work closely with the Head of Digital and other employees in the digital management team.
As a leader, you create results through others. You develop, clarify and collaborate on ATG's goals together with your employees and create conditions for their further development.
